A Season of Style

By: Leina King

Although football season is officially months away, I, like many SMU gals, believe it’s never too soon to begin scouting for the “perfect” Boulevard looks. At SMU, dressing for football season is an art, a kabuki-like dance that follows specific rules and guidelines. All-white clothing for one game, followed by all Mustang red for the next. These traditions alone can make planning the perfect outfit a challenge. Throw in the fact that unlike most places with distinct seasons, Texas weather in the fall can be as erratic as Black Friday crowds at the mall, and your Boulevard wardrobe must be equipped for any extreme. With fall/winter trends on the back burner, the spring/summer looks now on the market will keep you cool on those fall days in Dallas when the thermostat hits 90-plus degrees. So, now is the time to not only buy, but also a time to find outfit inspiration for the 2017 football season. Pony up!

White-out: And so it begins — the first Boulevard of the school year and the beginning of a season of fashionable pregame festivities. As is tradition, all the girls are adorned with their favorite all-white civvies, while some also opt for traditional Texas cowboy boots to top off their outfit.

Red-out: With the first Boulevard on the books, dressing becomes less traditional and more about personal style. For the red-outs, incorporate any amount of red, whether that means a red statement purse or a leather skirt for your inner cool girl.

Blue-out: Add some flare to the blue-out with a pair of bellbottom jeans coupled with wedges and a weather-appropriate top. You’ll be comfortable, casual, chic and still dressed to impress.

Hot: As much as we’d like to believe each year will be different, it never is. Texas summers carry into fall…and winter…and so on. That said, it’s always important to have summer attire ready for the hot weather Boulevards that are guaranteed to happen.

Cold: Forget the old style rules. Redefine your winter whites and lighten up your typical winter black go-to outfit. Swap the moto jacket for a crisp white sweater dress and statement boots to freshen up your winter look.
