Toto, We’re Not in Neutrals Anymore: Fashion Month Takes on Sparkles

By: Josie Washburn

If fashion month had a theme song, this spring/summer season’s would certainly be the classic single ‘Blinded by the Light.’ Designers sent a seemingly endless stream of glittering pieces down the runway, outdoing one another at every turn. From New York, to London, to Paris, there was no lack of shine.

The trend started out in New York. At Marc Jacob’s, the designer showed his affinity for all things glitz with multiple sequined gowns in vibrant hues of pink and blue, and one especially sparkly black blazer. JW Anderson took its turn in London with three similarly sequined cocktail dresses. Followed by Gucci’s gold and silver sequined sweater and shimmering pink military jacket. And topping off in Paris with Saint Laurent’s more subdued take via femininely sequined black men’s dress shirts and shimmering black cocktail dresses.

Off the runway the dazzle only continues. In just under a month, the fad has already taken to the streets. With street style stars sporting the just-released silver gleaming knee-high Chanel boots. It was impossible to ignore the glitter and sequin boots, which Fashionista called the “Single Breakout Shoe Trend of Fall 2017 Fashion Month.”

“We just got in this Monse sequin jersey and already people are running to preorder it so I can tell it’s going to be a really big trend for Spring,” says Forty Five Ten sales associate Reed Allen.

He continues, “I know a lot of women that are eagerly awaiting when we get some of the Marc Jacobs pieces in, I’m personally partial to the glitter and sparkle, I love to stand out with my clothes!”

If Marc Jacobs, Gucci, JW Anderson and Saint Laurent are any indication, glitter is the official trend of spring/summer 2018. With these mega-brands handling the sequin clothing and Chanel’s ubiquitous sparkling boot taking care of your shoe needs, the fashion circuit will have no problem glittering from head to toe. And “spring sparkles” seems only fitting, right?
