Healthy Hair: Tips for the Longest, Luscious Locks

Hair is so important. It can revolutionize your mood, style, and aesthetic. Whether you rock a natural look or opt for a bright pop of color, there’s one thing that can dampen your hair faster than water: brittle, dull hair. It’s hard not to damage your hair in a world full of curling irons, hairdryers, and other styling tools. But these key tips and trick can help to mitigate the damage.

1. The Cold Plunge: I love taking hot showers, but sadly hair doesn’t. Hot water takes away the natural oils and moisture from your hair, leaving it dry and static. Try showering with cold water to seal in the moisture and prevent frizz. If you can’t commit to an icy shower try doing a quick cold water rinse at the end.

2. Hair Oils: Usually a greasy head is not a good look, but it is great for glossy locks. Try slathering your strands in a mixture of argan oil and coconut oil. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes for the best results.

3. Brush for Beauty: The type of brush you use matters. Hair is delicate, and typical brushes are anything but gentle. Try out a boar bristle brush! The bristles help to stimulate hair growth, and the brush will evenly distribute your natural oils from the root to the ends.

4. Silky Smooth: Silk material to use on your hair, especially if you like a little luxury in your life. Silk hair ties, silk headbands, and silk pillowcases all help to reduce breakage. Sleep your way to silkier strands with a pillowcase? Sign me up!

And last but not least, I reached out to an ‘expert’ to hear about any final hair tips. Here’s what SMU junior, Cameron Hay, had to say when asked about her stunning blonde locks:

“I love using Moroccan hair oil I have been using it every day since I was 14, and it makes my hair so soft! I recently got a Mason Pearson hairbrush and it works amazingly. It never tears my hair and it helps reduce my split ends. Also, I use Dry Bar’s purple shampoo to keep my blonde from getting brassy and it smells great!”
