Want to spice things up this holiday season? Let’s discuss TikTok’s latest trend: ‘Jane Birkinifying’ your bag, where decorating your tote has been taken to a whole new level.
Most famous for designing the Birkin bag, Jane Birkin was known for her practical and lived-in treatment of her designer bags. She believed bags were supposed to be worn and used because after all, why else would you purchase a tote? She embraced practicality while staying chic.
Users on TikTok have been accessorizing their bags with everything from Van Cleef alhambra bracelets to eccentric beaded charms. These bag charms allow wearers to display their personal style and turn a closet staple into a statement piece that reflects their individuality.
Bag charms also make amazing gifts for the holidays, whether as a stocking stuffer or as a gift to your friends. If you’re attending a white elephant or secret Santa party these little charms bring an element of thoughtful personalization to gift-giving.

The Director of Marketing for SMU Look Francesca Palmer shared, “I love bag charms. They add a sense of individualism that is hard to find in today’s market. I think they’re perfect for adding some personality to a bag and differentiating it.”
I decided to ask our fellow SMU fashionistas about their take on bag charms. Brianna Kunich, a junior studying Marketing and Fashion Media, says “Bag charms allow me to add bits of my personality to my bags as well as a pop of color. These little accents bring a sense of fun and individuality to my outfits while elevating my overall look.”
Senior Journalism student Elle Stewart added on saying, “Bag charms elevate your bag by adding a unique piece of yourself. I love mine and I make sure to rotate often.” Clearly, we have the SMU student stamp of approval.
Bag charms have made their entrance in 2024 and most definitely plan to stay! With the wide variety of charms, fashion lovers can express their creativity through this fun activity. For your mom, best friend, or even boss, this is sure to be an easy, cute gift. The holidays are coming quick and these make A+ presents for any occasion.
