With sicknesses swirling and viruses spreading through campus, it is now more important than ever to stay healthy. You’re probably sick in bed, fighting an unknown cold. Let’s turn your sickness into a wellness retreat with practical, cozy, and science-backed tips to help you recover.
Hydration is key
Water is your body’s best friend when you’re under the weather. Sip on peppermint tea to soothe your throat and calm your mind. The menthol can ease congestion, making it a perfect addition to your wellness arsenal. Science also shows that consuming a mix of electrolytes helps water absorb into your body, replenishing essential minerals lost during your cold. My personal favorite electrolyte brand is ZYM Hydration.
Hotel-level bedding
A well-curated bedroom setup not only boosts comfort but also inspires productivity. Invest in great pillows, sheets, and decor. Barefoot dreams mixed with a silk pillowcase is pure perfection – you need to be cozy while getting work done in bed! Silk pillowcases reduce friction on your skin and hair, while plush blankets create a cocoon. Studies also suggest that weighted blankets reduce anxiety levels, promoting restorative sleep. An inviting space can lift your mood and make staying in bed feel like a luxury rather than a necessity.
Convenience
Instead of walking all the way down to the first floor of your dorm, I’d recommend purchasing an ice tray to put in your freezer. A mini fridge in your room can also store chilled water, electrolyte drinks, and soothing snacks like yogurt or fruit to keep your energy up. The last thing you want to do is go on an exploration in order to be properly hydrated and fed. But, if you do get out of bed, make sure you have cozy slippers, a fluffy robe, and Zicam waiting for you next to your desk.
Need a splurge?
Buy an LED facial mask. My favorite one is from Poosh. The different light therapy colors promote skin health, reduce inflammation, and give you a radiant glow even when you’re in bed. Yes, you’ll look a little silly and like a robot, but why not make your skin amazing while you’re bedridden? They’re a worthwhile investment for both wellness and self-care, doubling as a mood booster during recovery.
By transforming your sick day into a wellness retreat, you’re not just recovering — you’re thriving. Prioritize hydration, comfort, and convenience, and treat yourself to a splurge that lifts your spirits. With these tips, you’ll be back to your vibrant self in no time, ready to conquer SMU life.
Preventative Measures
Stop the Flu! Please don’t forget to get your annual flu shot to stop the virus. No need to be lying sick in bed. In case you do not know where to go, SMU is hosting Flu Clinics on Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Oct. 2 from 10 am to 2 p.m. by the Flagpole. Other dates include Oct. 7 from noon to 3 p.m. in the Law Quad, and Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hughes-Trigg Benefit Fair. Stay safe, my loves!
