The latest fashion trend and you can even do it yourself.
I know I’m not the only one who’s seen this trend all over TikTok and Instagram. The latest in the DIY craze is none other than: Jean Boots. Look, I’m not one to judge, fashion is subjective and personal, and–if I’m being completely honest–I don’t hate Jean Boots, I’m just confused by them, as I’m sure some of you are, as well. Let’s talk about it.
The premiere.
Jean Boots debuted on TikTok over the last few weeks, igniting hot and fast from supermodel Elsa Hosk’s Instagram photo from June 4th, 2022. The staple boots Hosk wears are from the Icelandic brand Kalda. According to the Kalda website, the “Bux Denim Jeans Boot” are made from “upcycled dead stock denim jeans so each pair is different”. They go for $577 and are currently available for pre-order on the website. The now viral photo of Hosk is a prime example of the grungy, Y2K aesthetic many fashionistas/influencers are going for right now. The photo is seemingly spontaneous and the look is minimalistic, not to mention modeled by a literal former Victoria’s Secret Angel. What’s not to love? Oh, the price point.
Pick up your scissors.
Because this trend picked up rapidly on TikTok, the target market is relatively young adults who aren’t looking to spend over $500 on a pair of boots that won’t be in style in three weeks. So, what do you do: You do it yourself. As seen on the many, many TikTok tutorials posted over the past few weeks, you can achieve this look by simply cutting the ends off of old jeans and folding them over a pair of knee-high boots. Quick, easy, efficient, accessible, and trendy. No wonder everyone’s doing it, it’s like the Gen-Z version of a Canadian Tuxedo.

If you’ve made it this far and you love this trend, if not love it even more, why not give it a try? It’s arguably one of the first fast-catching trends that almost anyone can do, as long as you have a pair of boots, old jeans, and scissors. Almost anything worn by a supermodel is considered high fashion, however, when replicated it doesn’t nearly compare to the original inspiration, especially when DIYed. So far, the DIY versions have all turned out great and I personally love the way everyone is styling them. It’s a great addition of timeliness and trendiness to one’s fall wardrobe as the weather gets chillier and we start pulling out our denim jackets (and now denim boots).
