Small Business Spotlight: Kate Swail Designs

By: Elizabeth Wheless

Supporting small businesses is such a great way to give back to your community, especially here in Dallas, where we are lucky to have so many amazing entrepreneurs, specifically women in business. This past year I have had the pleasure of getting to know Kate Swail, a Highland Park local and the founder of Kate Swail Jewelry Designs. Her brand, which features turquoise and gold pieces, is designed in the US and manufactured by artisans in San Miguel, Mexico. Kate has an eye for design and draws inspiration from her everyday life and the vintage jewelry she grew up seeing her grandmother wear. Here is a look into a recent conversation I had with Kate about her line:

What is your biggest design inspiration?

Kate: “My grandmother Mimi!”

How has the Dallas community and network impacted your experience as a small business owner?

Kate: “Dallas is a vibrant, supportive and fashion forward community. The women have huge hearts, as well as handbags and heels. They are willing to go big and bold which is exactly where our accessories come into play!”

What advice would you give to a reader interested in refreshing their wardrobe using accessories?

“Have fun with accessories and step out of your comfort zone. If your comfort zone is one necklace, add one more. If your comfort zone involves a diamond huggie earring, step and wear a large chandelier (earring). If your comfort zone is one cuff, add one more. You get the point.”

What are you looking forward to about your new holiday collection?

“We are so excited about the holiday season, we love to go out of our comfort zone of Turquoise and Gold during the holidays. Think sparkly rainbow baubles that pair perfectly with all your holiday looks, at very attractive price points. Cheers to baubles and bubbles in the season of celebrations!”

Kate’s work has been featured in trunk shows around the country, NBC Texas Today, and in photoshoots with SMU’s very own Professor Jenny Davis. Stay tuned for her holiday costume jewelry collection with a campaign called “Bubbles and Baubles.” Follow Kate’s lead as we move into the holiday season and be inspired to push the boundaries by adding accessories to your looks.
