SMU Look’s Guide to Grandpa Style

By Mari Sato

As the latest niche aesthetic comes into focus, an unlikely model takes the runway: your grandpa, or rather the symbol of the stereotypical grandpa. Dubbed “grandpa-core” by Tiktok’s influencers, this trend is all about that eclectic and slightly eccentric style. Think lots of knitwear (especially cardigans), polos, blazers and baggy jeans. However, a big issue reveals itself as people attempt to purchase new items to emulate this style. Unfortunately, the unique garments procured over a lifetime are not as easily bought as other trends. As social media’s grip tightens, we get inspired to adapt to the latest trend and then replace it with a new aesthetic a few months later. As this cycle repeats, we lose sight of what we value in clothing and jump into the ruthless cycle of microtrends. I believe that “grandpa core” may be a welcome solution to this trend cycle, promoting a more personalized approach to dressing.

Now, the final question remains: How to incorporate this aesthetic without looking frumpy? The best way to avoid this fashion sin is to combine different silhouettes, especially if you find yourself on the shorter side like myself. You do not want to overwhelm your figure by drowning yourself in oversized clothes. The key is to find a combination of form-fitting and loose clothing that compliments your figure. This is an easy way to incorporate the trend without overbuying. For instance, that going-out-top you bought in 2017 could be an essential base component to effortlessly achieve this look. Here are the top items to include in your grandpa core outfit that won’t make you look like an actual grandpa.

Suzie Kondi The Greek Flag Jooshi Sweater

Marni Pink Striped Mohair Sweater

Alex Mill Fisherman Cabel Turtleneck Sweater

Knitwear

Knitwear is the cornerstone of this eclectic style, specializing in cardigans, sweater vests, cable knits, and more. Color is everything when it comes to these sweaters, and many of the colorways include earth tones or vivid hues. Accessorizing with additional knitwear is another excellent way to not only achieve this style but also create some cohesion within the textures of your outfit.

Sneakers and Loafers

The Grandpa sneaker is an instantly recognizable for its chunky, mostly white figure. However, as slimmer sneaker silhouettes have overtaken shoe designs, I suggest simply donning a vintage-inspired sneaker. The Adidas Sambas are a great option, and even the Onitsuka Tigers; both of these shoes will complement the look without distracting from it. Moreover, throw on some loafers for an even more sophisticated look; however, again, I caution against opting for an overly chunky silhouette.

Blazers

This look is all about layering, and nothing is better suited for that function than the perfect oversized blazer. This garment is something that will not only last a lifetime but also provide you with some additional office wear in preparation for summer internships and jobs. Invest in a quality piece, and do not be afraid to have it tailored. Many oversized blazers have the sleeves shortened, so it doesn’t look completely ridiculous. This can be an easy fix if you feel it is a bit too big, and tailoring can make a world of difference when it comes to the outfit silhouette.

Indulge Mystery with MYSTERY RUGBY from Rowling Blazers

Rugby Shirts

There are very few garments I love more than a good rugby shirt; however, finding one that doesn’t make me feel like a 10-year-old boy can be daunting. However, fear not because there are a plethora of options online from new and pre-loved sellers. I caution you to stay away from the commonly associated polo shirt as that will often hinder rather than help. I suggest checking out Rowling Blazers for both men and women. The brand offers unique prints and colorways as well as long-lasting quality. While rugby shirts are one of their main attractions, they also provide a wide variety of graphic and solid-color sweaters to further this eclectic style.
