As SMU students, we’re fortunate to live in Dallas which is known not only for its culture and energy, but also for its incredible food scene. In Texas, that means one thing: Tex-Mex. From sizzling fajitas to table side guacamole, Dallas is a hub for flavorful, authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. On nearly every corner, you’ll find a taco shop, a casual cantina or an upscale Mexican restaurant offering a new twist on classic dishes.
For many students like myself coming from out of state, the idea of “upscale Mexican” might sound surprising. But in Dallas, fine dining and Mexican cuisine go hand in hand. With so many options just minutes from campus, the only real challenge is deciding where to go first. Here’s a look at a few standout spots that have become staples in the SMU student dining experience.
Javier’s Gourmet Mexicano
Located right off the Katy Trail, Javier’s has been a Dallas staple since it opened in 1977. Known for its sophisticated take on classic Mexican dishes, it’s the kind of restaurant you’d take your parents to during Family Weekend or for a special celebration. Fan favorites include the fajitas, Mayan pork, Pechuga de Pollo a la Mexicana and key lime pie. However, the chips and salsa are known to fall short of expectations.
Doce Mesas
Another Dallas favorite with multiple locations, Doce Mesas offers a relaxed, welcoming vibe that’s perfect for casual evenings with friends. It’s also known for making an easy reservation for large groups. The patio is especially popular when the weather’s nice. Top menu picks include the chicken fajitas, brisket tacos, taco salad and guacamole which are all crowd-pleasers that pair perfectly with good company and good drinks.
Las Palmas
Las Palmas might be the hottest Mexican restaurant in Dallas right now. It’s almost always fully booked, and for good reason. With a lively patio and an elevated menu, it’s a favorite among young Dallas diners. The steak fajitas are a must-order, and their queso is a fan favorite. Word around town is they even serve an off-menu chicken Caesar wrap, which has become a huge hit. The only miss? The chopped salad, which may be too heavy on the cheese for some tastes.
El Molino
El Molino is the newest arrival to Snider Plaza and just steps from campus. As the latest concept from Vandelay Hospitality (the group behind DL Mack’s and Hudson House), El Molino has quickly drawn the SMU crowd. The restaurant enforces a dress code, adding a touch of formality to its modern aesthetic. Menu highlights include the brisket enchiladas, filet mignon fajitas and corn tempura. And if you’re looking for appetizers, this is the place to be.
The Verdict
When it comes to choosing the best Mexican restaurant near SMU, it’s nearly impossible to pick a winner. Each spot brings something different to the table – from Javier’s old-school charm to Las Palmas’ trendy energy. Dallas is a city that celebrates food and culture, and SMU students are lucky to be surrounded by some of the best Tex-Mex in the state. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a special night out, there’s always a new favorite waiting just around the corner.
