Tyler Talks Fashion: Brand Crush: Alaïa

By Tyler Martin

Have you ever heard the TikTok sound that goes: “If an outfit’s not interesting through color, then it has to be interesting through shape. And if it’s not interesting through shape, it has to be interesting through texture. And if it’s not interesting by texture then it has to be interesting through color”?

When I laid my eyes on the Alaïa Fall 2024 ready-to-wear collection, not only was it aesthetically flawless, but the line exhibited color, shape, and texture in the most cohesive manner, presenting a striking array of outfits perfect for a lover of minimalism.

“It’s moving on. I mean, we did va-va-voom for two-and-a-half years, and I still love it, but it’s not the moment where the world is now. It’s…how can you say it properly? It’s less sexualized, but still sensual,” said Peter Mulier, the brand’s current designer in Vogue’s runway report for the collection.

The line felt modest yet youthful, fresh yet timeless, modern yet classic- I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it!

When I look at a runway line, I’m always thinking: how could these pieces translate into my current wardrobe?

In this case, Alaïa’s collection included a wide range of colors that created individual monochromatic looks, so I can start there.

The line showcased plenty of cream, black, and navy, juxtaposed with vibrant colors like light pink, red, and deep purple. The collection also included patterns that felt classy and elegant with tasteful polka dots and cheetah print spotted on the catwalk. You’d think that a combination of bright colors, neutrals, and patterns would clash and feel chaotic in a collection of just 43 looks. However, Mulier managed to streamline the collection with his infusion of sculptural and draped elements throughout each look.

I was so inspired by the accessories showcased in the line which are so on par with what’s trending right now. Chunky bangles, small leather handbags, and low, strappy heels that all complemented the monochromatic looks, serving as the perfect reminder that chic accessories will elevate every time.

Since first viewing the line in early February, I’ve kept Alaïa’s color selection, playful patterns, and intentional accessories in mind when building my own outfits.

Fast forward to Spring break, I made a pit stop to Palm Beach, Florida, and stopped into the boutique called Kirna Zabête. There, the store offered a multitude of my favorite designer brands, including Alaïa, which I rarely get to see in person. The clothes, some of which I remembered seeing on the runway, were stunning up close as expected. Although, what really caught my attention was the selection of bags in-store.

The store offered Alaïa’s classic, staple bags – the Le Cœur, heart shaped bag and Mina perforated leather bag – as well as new shapes like the Le Teckel rectangular, mini bags.

While I recognized some of their classic designs, I can’t remember the last time I saw someone sporting an Alaïa accessory in person. With a price point similar to SMU-girl designer brand favorites like YSL, Goyard, and Bottega, I believe it’s time we see some Alaïa sprinkled across SMU’s campus. The unique shapes, distinctive touches, and high quality makes these bags perfect closet staples that are versatile enough to complement a variety of different outfits.

If you were to invest in one of the Alaïa bags, it is unlikely you would see your bag coming and going out of style so often. These bags have stood the test of time, and the brand’s new innovations are here to stay.

I’m obsessed with the Le Teckel rectangle mini bag that would pair great with a dress for formal, adding a touch of elegance to a dressy outfit. While the Le coeur heart bag makes a fun, playful pop to any everyday, daytime outfit.

Luckily, you won’t have to build a brand profile or wait in line to get your hands on an Alaïa bag, they’re available to purchase online and in several department stores.
