I’ll never forget The Devil Wears Prada movie moment when I saw Anne Hathaway’s character, Andy Sachs, post-makeover, strutting the streets of New York to Madonna’s iconic “Vogue.” I was completely mesmerized – the witty characters, addictive tunes, and of course, the stunning outfits. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted to work in fashion. With the movie’s 20th anniversary approaching and news of a sequel in the works, it feels fitting to reflect on the film that ignited my true love of fashion. Beyond just the outfits, the film showcased so many themes that drew me into the multifaceted world of fashion.
For many of us in college, our twenties are a time of self-discovery, especially when it comes to finding our personal style. Our earlier years allow us to experiment, and by college, we often have a clearer sense of what makes us feel authentically ourselves. This evolution is beautifully illustrated through Andy’s character. When we first meet Andy, her style is drab and very uninspired, earning her disses from her fashionable coworkers at Runway. Midway through the movie, she realizes that adapting to the fashion culture might help her gain respect from her demanding boss, Miranda Priestly. The makeover scene was a turning point not just in Andy’s wardrobe but also in her inner confidence. Suddenly, she radiates self-confidence, transforming her work ethic in the office and outlook on life. While some may view a change in wardrobe to be superficial and trivial, for Andy, it really represents this new sense of purpose. Later in the film, after realizing the fashion world is pulling her away from what truly matters in her life, Andy returns to herself in a more casual yet polished style. She has clearly learned a thing or two, but isn’t looking for other’s approval, ditching poly-blend sweaters to a fitted suede jacket. This return to her authentic self deeply resonates with me, showing how clothing can empower us and inspire our confidence as we progress through phases of life.
The Devil Wears Prada also provides a really fascinating insight into the fashion industry. While we are familiar with the duties of common, everyday jobs, the fashion world has always been pretty mysterious. Watching Andy navigate this high-pressure environment made me realize that this was the career path I wanted to pursue. This film emphasizes the importance of being both detail-oriented and creative – skills that are essential in fashion. Memorable lines, like “It’s a tough call, they’re so different,” show the nuances of the industry and how important it is to hone in on the intricacies in our work life. The fast-paced work environment can be thrilling, not just hectic, from attending run-throughs to rushing to pick up scarves at Hermes. I’ve always looked for excitement over monotony, and this movie really solidified my desire to thrive in such a setting.
The music in the movie is nothing short of magical. Who could forget the pairing of “Vogue” with Andy’s stylish outfit roll-out or U2’s “City of Blinding Lights” as she arrives in a taxi for Paris Fashion Week? The soundtrack is a nostalgic time capsule for me, transporting me back to my childhood. I even have a playlist featuring songs from the film. Songs like “Tres Tres Chic” and “Feelin’ Hypnotized” give me an instant boost and lift my spirits, and take me back to my family room couch where I first watched the movie.
One of the movie’s subtle yet powerful elements is in its portrayal of these major fashion cities, specifically New York and Paris. From the very start, we see stylish New Yorkers, showcasing the city as a center for fashion enthusiasts. New York’s fast pace sets the tone for a world where trends are constantly evolving. Paris, introduced as the mecca of fashion during the Paris Fashion Week scenes, represents this celebration of style and creativity coming together from all areas of the world. Without this movie, I may not have developed such a deep love for both cities and their fashionable aura, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
Has there ever been a film that has profoundly improved your life? For me, The Devil Wears Prada was more than just a few hours of entertainment. It was the moment I discovered my obsession with fashion, reminding me of the power of style and being true to myself.
