With Fall quickly approaching and the days getting cooler and shorter, safety on campus is such an important topic. Although the SMU campus often feels like a safe bubble, we are still very much part of the DFW metroplex. Being aware and prepared is vital to keep ourselves and those we love safe. Who doesn’t love feeling like they’re in a spy movie? Well there are plenty of fashionable and effectives gadgets on the market that keep safety in mind. We have broken down a few safety steps into comprehensive categories that are easy to integrate into your life.
Pepper Spray
While it might seem a bit obvious, pepper spray is an effective defense and now it comes in a variety of cute packages and even as a keychain!
Mini Alarm
These mini alarms are perfect for signaling an emergency and also come in a cute keychain. Some models are combined with pepper spray and act as a multitool
Flashlight
During spooky season, sometimes all you need is just a little light. While we would like to think our flashlight phones are sufficient, honestly they barely allow you to see one foot in front of you. Here are some ideas for portable, yet powerful flashlights.
Bags, Keys, Phone
Something to be aware of is that handsfree bags, such as crossbodies, are the safest as having your hands full is a point of weakness potential attackers look for. Try keeping your hands free, look up from your phone, especially when walking at night, and get your keys out of your bag prior to exiting a building so you can hop straight in your car.
Signals
If you plan on going to a party or a crowded place, it’s best to use the buddy system. Make arrangements for the ride home prior to going out and have a signal or phrase to use with your friends when it’s time to leave. Sharing your location with trusted friends and family members is an additional safety step.
Rideshare Apps
It’s best to not ride alone, but if you must, Uber has a new feature where you can share the status of your ride with someone on your contacts. Considering getting an Alto membership since they do more stringent background checks and use company cars instead of personal cars. Lastly when in doubt call it out. If your driver is making you feel unsafe don’t hesitate to say something or report them to the safety alert on the app.
Campus Safety
SMU has put safety measures in place on campus and it’s important to pay attention to them. If walking alone at night, try and spot the blue emergency lights nearest you. Add the SMU PD (214- 768-3388) contact into you phone and pay attention to the SMU aware alerts.
We can all play our part in keeping ourselves and each other safe this year by going over these safety tips. Don’t hesitate to report if you think something is up, because although it might feel embarrassing or dramatic, lives are spared by bystanders choosing to step up. Stay safe and happy Fall!
