Fall in Dallas: Hidden Gems and Seasonal Festivities You Don’t Want to Miss

By Isabella Popo

Sometimes, people think autumn doesn’t exist in Dallas, considering its high temperatures. The city is always trying to appeal to fall lovers with new activities and events nearly every day to celebrate autumn’s arrival. Even local spots, like Highland Park, get festive and decorative around the community. From musical theater productions to pumpkin patches, there’s something for everyone, especially if you’re not a Halloween party fan. Here are my favorite hidden gems around town to embrace the season’s best:

Texas State Fair

Kicking off with a highlight of the season, the Texas State Fair is a must-visit! The drive to the fairgrounds was quick and straightforward, but I highly recommend taking an Uber — parking can be quite challenging. We decided to go after 5 p.m., which saved us about $10 on admission compared to daytime pricing. However, once inside, the costs were steep. To fully enjoy the experience, budget at least $100, if not more. Despite the price, it made for a memorable and fun date night.

The fair offers something for everyone, with a seemingly endless array of games and attractions to keep you entertained. If budget were no concern, I could have easily spent the entire evening moving from one ride to the next. The food is another major draw — think jumbo turkey legs, corn dogs, and irresistible funnel cakes. It’s impossible to leave without indulging in some of the mouth-watering options. Overall, I recommend setting aside at least two hours to fully enjoy the fair. It was a fantastic experience, and I’d rate this fall activity a solid 7/10.

The Dallas Arboretum

I loved it here! Nothing in Dallas is more beautiful than the scenery at the arboretum, and it is a true shame I am just finding out about it now! Ticket prices were not overly expensive, but make sure to buy online before you go. This makes the process not only easier but cheaper too. Parking can be a bit of a challenge, so patience is key, especially on weekends. I would advise avoiding Sundays, as it tends to be particularly crowded. Although jam-packed, it was still gorgeous and made for a fabulous daytime date. Make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes and breathable clothes, because there is a lot of walking involved (just like the State Fair).

Upon entering, my boyfriend and I stumbled across a hill overlooking White Rock Lake. Many visitors were sprawled across the lawn, having picnics and playing with their children. The fall atmosphere was in full swing, with pumpkins adorning the gardens, seasonal decorations, and a café offering Halloween-themed drinks. If you’re looking for a calm, relaxing experience, the Arboretum is an excellent choice. For more high-energy activities, this might not be the best fit, but for a tranquil day outdoors, I highly recommend it. Overall, I would rate the Dallas Arboretum an 8/10!

Dallas Farmers Market

The Dallas Farmers Market is a charming spot with an array of cute vendors and fresh produce, making it a great place to explore, especially with friends rather than on a typical date. While the atmosphere is lively and full of vibrant offerings, it’s best to avoid weekends, as Saturday and Sunday can get crowded, with long waits for food (up to 20 minutes!). Many small businesses get their start here, adding to the market’s appeal with unique and locally sourced goods. Besides the culturally specific, year-round food and drinks, there were many Halloween/fall specials. You’ll find delicious seasonal treats like pumpkin-flavored beignets and drinks that add to the fall vibe — and we can’t forget our beloved pumpkin patch. My visit took roughly an hour, and I enjoyed every minute. 7/10!

Dracula @ Dallas Theater Center

If you’re into live-action, I have just the event for you. The Dallas Theater Center’s 2024 production of Dracula offers a fresh and thrilling adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic tale. I was unable to take a photo, but the theater was magnificent. Set in a gothic, immersive atmosphere, the play brings the dark and seductive world of Count Dracula to life with a modern twist. The production features innovative stage design, eerie lighting, and a chilling soundtrack that enhances the tension and drama. The performances are powerful and hilariously witty. Shows began on Oct. 11 and will run until Nov. 3. Kids ages 11 and up are welcome, but beware of cartoon violence, some coarse language, and PG-13 innuendos. Ticket prices increase as the date of the show approaches, so make sure to buy them in advance — they range from roughly $30 to $75. I’ll definitely be back to support the theater. It’s a 7/10 for me.

If none of these match your style, you can always opt for a cozy movie night with your girlfriends instead. My personal favorites are Halloweentown, Girl vs. Monster, and Twitches. I never skip out on my Disney classics, as horror isn’t really my thing. Popcorn and M&M’s are an obvious need, and phones must go on DND.

Whatever activity you decide to do, make sure you’re doing it with the people you love. It makes every experience ten times better. I’m three years into SMU, and I’m just now discovering some of my new favorite spots that honor autumn.
