In a bustling city like Dallas, there is no shortage of delicious restaurants, making it easy to satisfy any cravings. Whether it’s traditional Texas barbecue or a trendy sushi spot, there is a restaurant in Dallas for you. However, in a city that is saturated with steakhouses, there are many health-conscious restaurants as well. Dallas doesn’t lack in restaurants that prioritize fresh ingredients without sacrificing taste. Here’s a little overview of my top few health-conscious restaurants that I’ve been obsessed with, easy to get to from SMU:
- HG Sply Co.
Whenever I’m craving a meal that won’t leave me feeling gross or bloated, HG Sply Co. is at the top of my list. The menu is built around foods that truly fuel you, using locally sourced ingredients with a health -conscious focus – meaning no unnecessary additives. Plus, they steer clear of seed oils, opting for healthier cooking fats that help improve taste and nutrition.
One of my favorite dishes is their Chicken Campfire K-Bobs—a simple yet perfected creation. The grilled chicken pairs amazingly with the sweet potato hash and broccoli, making for a flavorful and satisfying meal. The best part? I feel great after. Without the inflammatory seed oils, I achieve that perfect fullness— satisfied, but never lethargic.
Last but not least, HG Sply Co. has the most beautiful rooftop patio. It’s one of my favorite spots in Dallas to unwind with a signature HG Sply Co. cocktail while enjoying the cityscape. They only use fresh, in-house juices and natural sweeteners, making every drink as clean and refreshing as their food.
- Unrefined Bakery
Unrefined Bakery is the perfect place for anyone who’s gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, vegetarian, or vegan to find delicious baked goods. With multiple locations around Dallas, it’s my go-to spot for a sweet treat that I can confirm won’t leave you feeling guilty afterward.
From cinnamon sweet rolls to chocolate cupcakes, every treat is made with natural ingredients—meaning, no artificial additives or processed ingredients. Serving paleo, sugar-free, and keto bread, Unrefined Bakery is dedicated to its health-conscious mission. They are successful in proving that carbs don’t always have to taste bad to leave you feeling “meh.” Whether I’m craving a pastry or a healthy indulgence, Unrefined Bakery is always the answer.
For anyone with dietary restrictions or simply looking for a healthier alternative, this bakery is a must-try spot. Unrefined Bakery is a testament that you don’t have to sacrifice delicious desserts for health.
- Origin Kitchen + Bar
Saving my favorite for last, Origin Kitchen + Bar features an entirely gluten-free menu. Being gluten-free myself, this is an absolute blessing when it comes to going out. Origin offers a wide variety of health-conscious dishes, anything from a flavorful Birria Tacos appetizer to an Orange Chicken entree paired with jasmine rice and broccoli.
Beyond the impressive menu, Origin Kitchen + Bar offers a comforting atmosphere, making it a go-to spot for any occasion – Sunday brunch, work lunch, or a chill dinner with friends. They also have an extensive drink menu that features fresh juices, cocktails, and organic coffee, offering something for everyone.
SMU student Dakota Rose praises, “I love Origin because I always feel good after I eat there. I’ve been gluten-free for years, and sometimes, even things labeled gluten-free make me sick. At Origin, I can trust the food is made well, tastes good, and is truly gluten-free.”
Together, these three restaurants prove that Dallas is more than just Tex-Mex, steaks, and barbecue-they are a destination for people looking towards healthy living. Hopefully, in the future, Dallas will stay committed to their vow of making nutritious options more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
