Trend Report: NYC Fashion Week 2022

By Ivy Nielsen

Last week, New York hosted its coveted fashion week that all eyes of the fashion world tuned into. As designers debuted their collections for (believe it or not) the upcoming Spring/Summer months of 2023, I looked to the outfits from the streets and audiences of the shows to see what is trending that you can implement into your fall season outfits.

Autumn is upon us! Although it may not feel like it yet here in Dallas, it’s time to transition your wardrobe to accommodate the changing weather we will hopefully be blessed with in the coming weeks. Here are my takes on the fall trends seen by celebrities on the streets of last week’s fashion palooza.

1. Cargo Pants

Cargo pants are at the top of my list for dominating the season’s fall trends. These comfortable and effortless bottoms pair with any top or shoes and can be easily dressed up or down. Pair with another top trend of the season, the white baby tee, for an effortless, cool-girl look perfect for running errands or grabbing a coffee before class.

2. Retro-Fitted Blazers

Blazers are not a surprise to anyone returning to the fall fashion scene. This year, Vogue reports, “To achieve a more retro silhouette with a super-cinched waist, this style setter belted her classic houndstooth blazer.” Take your oversized blazer from last season and cinch your waist with a belt, preferably with chunky hardware. This creates a silhouette with broadened shoulders, reminiscent of the chunky shoulder pads your mom sported in the ’80s. Pair with leather shorts and boots for a new take on the fall staple.

3. Metallics

Notably, my favorite fall season trend, metallics, continues to thrive from this past summer into fall-appropriate accessories. Seen is Kendall Jenner photographed in Vogue; the fashion icon sports a pop of silver from her handbag. I love metallic bags, but for a more daytime look, don’t get them confused with sequined/rhinestone bags, which are most suitable for evening wear. Linked below are some of my favorite metallic handbags of the season and the trend’s presence in shoes (another great way to take your ‘fit to the next level)!

4. Full-Length Coats

As opposed to seasons in past years where a shorter coat was the go-to, we see a switch to a longer silhouette this season. Mix and match prints and fabrics to cater to the weather or occasion. If you’re looking for an investment piece this season, I would suggest splurging on this. Especially in Dallas, where the temperature drops heading into winter, a good quality coat is essential for your wardrobe. Below I have listed wearable options that will last you for years.

5. The Mini-Skirt

Perfect for layering and to continue wearing into the warmer days of fall, the mini-skirt continues its reign from summer. Opt for more muted, neutral fall tones to match the season’s vibe. Pair with a trendy going-out top for the club, or layer with a chunky sweater and overcoat on a brisker day event. My favorite addition to any mini-skirt outfit is fall boots. Seen this season are the chunky Chelsea boot. You can’t go wrong with a pair in black!
